About this species
The white rhinoceros is a large African grazer recognised by its broad, square lip. It occurs as a far more numerous southern form and an almost vanished northern form, a distinction hidden by a single species-level label. Decades of protection allowed a major recovery from historic lows, but intense poaching has reversed gains in several strongholds.
Habitat, behaviour and ecological role
White rhinos favour grasslands and savanna mosaics with access to water and shade. Their grazing maintains short-grass patches used by other animals, while dung middens redistribute nutrients and communicate territorial information. Females invest several years in each calf, and the long interval between births limits how quickly populations can replace adults lost to poaching.
Why this species is at risk
Demand for horn drives organised poaching and creates severe costs for rangers and reserve managers. Habitat fragmentation restricts movement between populations, while drought and land-use pressure can reduce forage and water. The northern subspecies has reached a functional endpoint in the wild, whereas the southern subspecies still persists in multiple protected and privately managed populations.
Conservation outlook
Protection combines intelligence-led enforcement, secure reserves, biological management and work to reduce consumer demand. Moving animals can establish safer populations and preserve genetic diversity, but translocation is expensive and carries risk. Long-term success requires both living rhinos and connected habitat, not simply higher security around isolated herds.

Known occurrences
Dots are georeferenced occurrence records from OBIS (marine) and GBIF (global), not individual animals and not a complete range map. Up to 500 recent API results are cached; the profile renders at most 500 points.
